Signs of Overfertilizing Houseplants (and How to Fix Fertilizer Burn)
More fertilizer is not more growth — past a certain point it’s the opposite problem. Fertilizer is essentially a concentrated dose of mineral salts, and when there’s more of it in the soil than the roots can use, those salts pull water out of the roots instead of helping deliver it. The result looks a lot like drought stress, which is exactly why overfertilizing gets misdiagnosed as underwatering more often than it gets identified correctly.
How fertilizer burn happens
Roots absorb water through osmosis, which depends on the soil around them having a lower salt concentration than the fluid inside the root cells. Add too much fertilizer and that balance flips: the soil solution becomes saltier than the roots, so water gets pulled out of the root tissue instead of into it. The plant ends up dehydrated at a cellular level even if the soil is still visibly moist, and root tips — the most delicate, actively growing part of the root system — are usually the first tissue damaged.

Signs to watch for
Leaf tip and edge burn. Brown, crispy, or blackened tips and margins, usually starting on the oldest or largest leaves, sometimes with a thin yellow halo between the dead tissue and the healthy green. This is the single most recognizable sign of fertilizer burn — the tips are farthest from the roots and the first place water stress shows up. A white or crusty film on the soil surface or pot rim. As excess fertilizer salts build up and the water carrying them evaporates, they get left behind right at the surface. Wilting despite moist soil. A plant that’s drooping even though the soil is clearly damp is one of the clearest tells that the issue isn’t water. Stunted or slowed growth. New leaves come in smaller than expected, growth seems to stall out entirely, or a plant that was previously growing steadily just stops. Root damage. If you unpot a plant that’s been overfed, look for roots that are dark, dry, or brittle rather than the mushy brown roots typical of root rot. How to fix an overfertilized plant
Stop feeding immediately — this is not the moment to switch to a gentler fertilizer or a smaller dose, it’s the moment to stop entirely until the plant has visibly recovered.
Then flush the soil to physically remove the excess salts:
- Move the pot to a sink or tub and run plain, room-temperature water through the soil slowly and steadily, letting it drain freely out the bottom.
- Use a generous volume — roughly three to four times the volume of the pot — so the water has enough contact time and flow to actually carry dissolved salts out through the drainage holes rather than just wetting the surface.
- Let it drain completely and don’t set the pot back in a saucer that will let it reabsorb the runoff.

Trim off leaves that are more than about half burned; they won’t recover and the plant does better putting its energy into new growth than trying to repair dead tissue. Leaves with only minor tip damage can usually be left alone.
Recovery is slow. New growth typically won’t reappear for a few weeks, and existing damaged tissue won’t reverse — the goal of flushing is to stop things from getting worse and let the plant recover on its own timeline, not to undo the visible damage immediately.
How to prevent it going forward
Dilute more than the label suggests, not less. Feed only during active growth. When in doubt, skip a feeding rather than guess and apply one. A plant that’s slightly underfed for a few extra weeks will show mild, easily corrected nutrient deficiency signs; a plant that’s overfed can lose root tissue that takes months to regrow.
