White Crust on Soil or Pots: What It Means and How to Fix It


A white, crusty buildup on the soil surface, around the base of a plant, or wicking through the outside of a terracotta pot looks alarming the first time you notice it, but it’s rarely anything exotic. In almost every case, it’s mineral or fertilizer salts left behind as water evaporates — a cosmetic issue on the surface, and a sign worth paying attention to underneath.

What it actually is

The crust is dissolved solids — mostly calcium and magnesium from tap water, or leftover nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium salts from fertilizer — that get left behind once the water carrying them evaporates. Water moves up through soil and through porous terracotta as it dries, carrying whatever’s dissolved in it along the way, and depositing it right at the surface where the evaporation happens. Mineral crust vs. mold — how to tell them apart

Occasionally what looks like a white crust is actually a harmless surface mold instead, and the fix is different, so it’s worth distinguishing the two before treating it:

  • Mineral crust is hard, chalky, and often forms in a ring or a thin crusty layer exactly where water last evaporated — the soil surface, the pot rim, or a bloom on the outside of unglazed terracotta.
  • Mold is fuzzy or fluffy in texture rather than hard and crusty, tends to show up in patches rather than a clean ring, and usually appears after the soil has stayed damp for a while. Letting the soil surface dry out more between waterings is generally enough to clear mold on its own.

Fertilizer salts build up when a plant is fed regularly but the soil is never flushed with plain water in between. Is it actually harmful?

The crust itself, sitting on the outside of the pot or on top of the soil, is mostly a cosmetic issue. What matters more is what it implies about salt levels inside the soil — if enough has built up, it can start to burn roots and interfere with the plant’s ability to take up water and nutrients properly. A light dusting on a terracotta pot exterior isn’t urgent. How to fix it

Flush the soil. Run plain water through the pot slowly until it’s draining freely from the bottom, then repeat two or three times. This dissolves accumulated salts in the soil and carries them out through the drainage hole rather than leaving them to concentrate further.

Scrub the crust off the pot. For terracotta, a stiff brush with water usually loosens it; for more stubborn deposits, a diluted vinegar-and-water solution helps dissolve the mineral buildup — soak briefly, scrub, and rinse well before the pot goes back near the plant.
