Pothos vs. Philodendron: How to Tell Them Apart
This is the single most common houseplant mix-up there is, and it’s not just a beginner problem — plants get mislabeled at nurseries and big-box stores often enough that even the tag isn’t a reliable guide. Pothos and heartleaf philodendron both trail or climb, both have heart-shaped green leaves, and both get recommended to beginners for the same reasons. But they’re different plants, and there are a handful of physical features that settle the question for good.
The cataphyll: the most reliable tell
The single best feature to check is the cataphyll — a thin, papery sheath that wraps around each new philodendron leaf as it forms. As the leaf inside matures and unfurls, the cataphyll dries out, turns papery brown, and eventually drops off, leaving a small scar on the stem where it was attached.
Pothos doesn’t produce a cataphyll at all. A new pothos leaf just emerges directly from the stem, rolled up tight, with nothing wrapping around it as it grows.
If you can catch a plant actively putting out new growth, this is the one feature that isn’t ambiguous: a papery sheath around the new leaf means philodendron, no sheath means pothos.
Petiole shape
The petiole is the stem connecting each leaf to the main vine, and the two plants differ here in a way you can feel as much as see.
- Philodendron petioles are rounded and smooth all the way around.
- Pothos petioles have a slight groove or indented channel running down the top length of the stem — you can often feel it by running a finger along the petiole.
It’s a subtler difference than the cataphyll, but it’s consistent and useful as a second check.
Leaf texture and shape
- Pothos leaves tend to feel thicker, waxier, and almost rubbery — more substantial in the hand, with a glossier surface.
- Philodendron leaves are thinner and softer, with a semi-matte to satin finish rather than a glossy one. Heartleaf philodendron leaves also tend to taper to a more pronounced point at the tip, while pothos leaves are usually a bit more evenly heart-shaped and symmetric overall.
These differences are real but harder to judge with confidence from a single leaf, especially on a young plant — they’re most useful as a supporting clue alongside the cataphyll and petiole check, not a standalone identifier.
New growth color
New philodendron leaves frequently emerge with a bronze, reddish, or coppery tint before greening up as they mature, and the cataphyll itself is sometimes tinted too. New pothos growth is usually just a paler, slightly yellow-green version of the mature leaf color, without the bronze or red cast. This isn’t universal across every variety of either plant, but it’s a reasonable supporting clue alongside the more reliable features above.
Does it actually matter which one you have?
Not for day-to-day care. Both are easygoing vining plants that want bright, indirect light, a dry-down between waterings, and a well-draining pot — if you’ve been caring for one thinking it was the other, you almost certainly haven’t done anything wrong. Where it does matter is expectations. Growth rate, mature leaf size, and specific variety traits differ between the two — a neon pothos and a philodendron Brasil, for example, are cultivars of different plants entirely, with their own variegation patterns and quirks that only make sense once you know which base plant you’re actually working with. Knowing which one you have also matters if you’re setting a plant up to climb rather than trail — both respond well to a moss pole with noticeably larger mature leaves, but how quickly each one gets there differs.
The short version
Check for a cataphyll on new growth first — its presence or absence is the most reliable single answer. If you can’t catch new growth, feel the petiole for a groove (pothos) versus fully round (philodendron), and use leaf texture and new-growth color as supporting evidence rather than proof on their own. And if you’re still not sure after all of that, don’t worry about it too much — the care overlap between the two is close enough that “probably one of these two” is already enough information to keep the plant alive and thriving.
