Epsom salt shows up constantly in houseplant advice — add a spoonful to the watering can, mix it in every month, use it to green up a struggling plant. Some of that is grounded in real plant chemistry. Most of it is a home remedy that got repeated so often it turned into a general-purpose cure, which it isn’t. What Epsom salt actually is

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate (MgSO₄), not a fertilizer in any real sense. It supplies exactly two things: magnesium and sulfur, both of which are real nutrients plants use, but neither of which is nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium — the three nutrients that actually appear on a fertilizer’s NPK label and that plants need in the largest quantities. Epsom salt won’t feed a plant the way a balanced fertilizer does, because it isn’t built to. It’s a single-purpose mineral supplement, useful only when that one specific mineral is what’s actually missing.

When it actually helps

Epsom salt earns its keep in exactly one situation: correcting a real magnesium deficiency. Magnesium is a mobile nutrient, meaning the plant pulls it from older leaves to support new growth when supply is short, so a deficiency shows up as interveinal yellowing on older, lower leaves — the leaf tissue between the veins turns pale or yellow while the veins themselves stay green, sometimes with a reddish or purplish tinge along the edges. How to use it correctly

If you’ve confirmed the symptom pattern actually matches magnesium deficiency, dilute roughly 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt per gallon of water and use it in place of a regular watering, not stacked on top of one. Treat it as an occasional, targeted correction — once every four to six weeks at most while the plant recovers, then stop once new growth comes in green and even.
