How to Set Up an Enclosed Plant Cabinet for Humidity-Loving Plants


Some houseplants just don’t do well in normal household humidity, no matter how much you mist or group them together. Velvet-leafed aroids in particular tend to want humidity levels well above what any open room can sustain. An enclosed plant cabinet solves this by sealing plants inside a controlled environment instead of trying to fight the whole house’s air.

What an enclosed plant cabinet is

At its core, it’s a cabinet with glass doors — often a repurposed glass display cabinet, an old china cabinet, or an IKEA piece retrofitted for the purpose, though purpose-built “grow cabinets” are sold specifically for this now too. The glass doors seal in humidity while still letting you see and enjoy the plants inside, unlike a fully closed opaque box.

Why it works better than an open room

An open room, even a humid one, is constantly losing moisture to air exchange through doors, windows, and HVAC systems — the same reason a pebble tray only affects the air immediately around a plant rather than the whole space. An enclosed cabinet removes that problem almost entirely. With the doors shut, you can hold 70 to 90%+ humidity steadily, day after day, because there’s very little air exchange to undo it. The enclosure also buffers plants from household drafts and temperature swings near doors, windows, or air vents — conditions that stress sensitive aroids even when humidity itself is fine.

What you actually need

A cabinet alone isn’t enough — a few pieces of equipment make the difference between a humid box and a healthy growing environment.

  • Grow lights. Cabinets are often placed away from windows, either because that’s where the furniture fits or because direct sun through glass can overheat an enclosed space fast.   • A small clip fan or computer fan for airflow. This is the step people skip most often, and it’s the one that causes the most problems. Stagnant, humid, warm air without any circulation is exactly the condition fungal and bacterial issues need to take hold — leaf spot, rot, and mold on the soil surface all show up far more readily in a sealed, motionless environment than in open air. A cheap USB-powered fan running continuously, or even just for part of the day, is enough to keep air moving and cut that risk dramatically. Don’t build a sealed high-humidity box without one.
  • A thermo-hygrometer. Guessing at conditions inside a closed cabinet isn’t reliable — a small digital thermo-hygrometer placed at plant height tells you the actual temperature and humidity so you can adjust the fan, light, or door-cracking as needed instead of assuming everything’s fine.

Good candidates for this kind of setup

Not every plant needs this level of intervention, and putting an easygoing plant in an enclosed cabinet is unnecessary effort. This setup earns its keep with plants that are genuinely difficult to satisfy in normal room humidity:

  • Alocasia Black Velvet and other velvet Alocasias, which are prone to crispy, browning leaf edges in average household air
  • Anthurium crystallinum, prized for its velvet foliage and correspondingly demanding about humidity to keep it looking good
  • Philodendron verrucosum, another velvet-leafed aroid that struggles and stalls in dry conditions but thrives with stable high humidity

Getting started

Start with the cabinet, add a fan and light before you add plants, and let the thermo-hygrometer run for a few days empty to see how the space behaves before moving anything sensitive in.
