How to Set Up a Grow Light for Houseplants

Getting the light itself right matters less than most people expect. Getting the distance, duration, and placement right matters a lot more, and it’s where most setups quietly go wrong.
Spectrum: don’t overthink it
Full-spectrum white LED is the practical default for houseplants, and for the vast majority of setups it’s all you need to think about. Skip the red-and-blue panels marketed for cannabis and vegetable seedlings — they push growth harder than any houseplant needs, and they’re unpleasant to have on in a living space. Look for a bulb or panel rated somewhere around 4000-6500K color temperature, which sits close to natural daylight and looks normal in a room.
Kelvin rating and PAR output start to matter more once you’re chasing serious growth — trying to get a finicky plant to flower, or optimizing output for a dedicated plant room — but for keeping a pothos or a snake plant healthy in a dim corner, any reputable full-spectrum LED bulb will do the job without needing to compare spec sheets.
Distance: the setting most people get wrong
Distance has a bigger effect on how much light actually reaches the plant than most people expect, because light intensity drops off sharply as it moves away from the source rather than gradually. A light that looks plenty bright to your eyes from three feet away may be delivering a fraction of what the plant needs at that range.
- Too close can scorch or stress leaves, especially with a strong fixture — watch for drooping, bleached patches, or crispy spots on the leaves nearest the light.
- Too far looks fine but does very little — the plant gets some light, but not enough to actually replace what a bright window would provide.
- As a general range, 12-24 inches above the plant works for most standard LED fixtures. Stronger, higher-output panels can sit farther back; smaller, weaker bulbs need to sit closer. Check the manufacturer’s guidance if it’s given, since output varies a lot between products, and adjust based on how the plant responds over the following couple of weeks.

Duration: more isn’t better
Run the light for roughly 10-14 hours a day for most foliage houseplants — enough to mimic or supplement a full day of natural light, with a real dark period afterward. Plants need darkness as part of their normal cycle, not just less light; a fixture left on around the clock can stress a plant rather than help it, even though it’s technically getting more total light exposure.
A cheap outlet timer is worth buying alongside the light itself. Consistency matters more than precision here — a light run reliably for 12 hours a day beats one that’s sometimes on for 8 and sometimes for 16 because someone forgot to flip the switch.
Placement: side-lighting, overhead, and rotation
Overhead lighting mimics how most plants receive light outdoors and is the simplest setup for a single plant or a small shelf — hang or clamp the fixture directly above the pot at the distance guidance above.
Side-lighting works better for a wide shelf of multiple plants, or for a plant sitting right next to a window where the light is coming from the side rather than above. It’s less naturalistic, but it still works, since plants respond to light intensity and duration more than the exact angle it’s coming from.
Whichever setup you use, rotate the plant a quarter turn every week or two. Growth leans and thickens toward whatever light source is strongest, and a plant left facing the same direction under a fixed light will grow lopsided over time in exactly the way it would lean toward a window. Rotating evens that out.
What to watch after setup
Give a new setup a couple of weeks before judging it. A plant that’s underlit will show it through stretched, leggy new growth or leaves that stay small and pale — signs worth checking for anyway if you’re unsure the plant needed supplemental light in the first place.
