What Does NPK Mean on Fertilizer Labels?
Every fertilizer, from a $6 bottle at the hardware store to a bag of granules for the vegetable garden, carries the same three-number code somewhere on the label: something like 10-10-10, 20-10-10, or 15-30-15. That’s the NPK ratio, and once you know what it means, you can walk past the marketing copy on the front of the bottle and read the one part of the label that actually matters.

What N, P, and K stand for
NPK is short for Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium — the three nutrients plants need in the largest quantities, always listed in that order.
- Nitrogen (N) drives leafy, green growth. It’s the nutrient behind lush foliage and the one most responsible for how fast a plant visibly grows. Foliage houseplants — pothos, philodendron, monstera, most ferns — lean on nitrogen more than the other two.
- Phosphorus (P) supports root development and flowering. Plants use more of it when they’re establishing a root system or putting energy into buds and blooms.
- Potassium (K) supports overall plant health — things like water regulation within the plant and general resistance to stress, disease, and temperature swings. It doesn’t produce a visible growth spurt the way nitrogen does, but a plant low on it is more fragile across the board.
What the numbers actually represent
The three numbers are percentages by weight. A 10-10-10 fertilizer is 10% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, and 10% potassium by weight — the remaining 70% is filler, carrier material, and sometimes trace micronutrients like iron, magnesium, or zinc. A 20-10-10 fertilizer has twice as much nitrogen relative to phosphorus and potassium as a balanced 10-10-10 does, not necessarily more total nutrient content — that depends on how concentrated the product is to begin with.
This is also why you can’t directly compare a 10-10-10 to a 20-20-20 and assume the second is “twice as strong” in some universal sense. It has double the percentage of each nutrient, but how much of that actually reaches the plant still depends on the dilution rate on the label and how much of the product you use.
Reading the ratio for what you’re growing
- Balanced ratios (10-10-10, 20-20-20, and similar) supply nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in roughly equal proportions. This is a reasonable general-purpose choice for most foliage houseplants, which aren’t chasing a specific bloom cycle and just need steady, even feeding.
- Nitrogen-leaning ratios (something like 20-10-10) push extra nitrogen relative to the other two, which suits plants you’re growing mainly for leaf growth and size rather than flowers.
- Phosphorus-leaning ratios, often sold as “bloom booster” formulas (10-30-20 or similar), shift the balance toward phosphorus to support bud and flower development. These make sense for flowering houseplants — African violets, orchids, peace lilies — during their blooming phase, but they’re not a better all-purpose choice for foliage plants. Feeding a pothos a bloom-booster formula doesn’t get you anything a balanced fertilizer wouldn’t.
For most people with a mixed shelf of foliage houseplants, a balanced or mildly nitrogen-leaning fertilizer is the right default, and it’s not worth agonizing over the exact ratio beyond that.
A higher ratio isn’t a stronger dose
It’s tempting to read a 20-20-20 label and assume it’ll get better results than a 10-10-10, the same way you might read “extra strength” on a bottle of aspirin. Fertilizer doesn’t work that way. A more concentrated fertilizer diluted properly delivers a normal, safe dose. The same fertilizer used at full strength, or applied more often than the label calls for, delivers an overdose regardless of what the NPK numbers say.
