Hydrogen peroxide shows up constantly as a houseplant fix — for root rot, fungus gnats, moldy soil, all of it. Diluted correctly, it does have real uses. Used at full strength or as a stand-alone cure, it can do more harm than good. The difference comes down to concentration and what you’re actually expecting it to do.

What hydrogen peroxide actually does

The hydrogen peroxide sold at drugstores is a 3% solution. When it contacts organic material — soggy soil, fungal growth, insect larvae — it breaks down into water and oxygen, releasing that oxygen as the fizzing you see on contact. That fizz is the whole mechanism: the burst of oxygen can kill some fungal spores and soft-bodied larvae on contact, and it temporarily oxygenates soil that’s gone anaerobic from sitting too wet. Correct dilution and how to apply

Use standard 3% hydrogen peroxide from the drugstore — not a higher-concentration product from a salon or hardware store, which is strong enough to burn skin and will do far worse to roots.

Mix 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide to 3-4 parts water. For a typical houseplant pot, that’s roughly 1/4 cup of peroxide to 1-1.5 cups of water, adjusted for pot size. Pour it through the soil slowly, the same way you’d water normally, until it runs out the drainage holes. Don’t repeat it more than once every week or two. Peroxide doesn’t build up in soil the way a fertilizer salt would, but repeated frequent drenching still stresses the plant’s root environment, and there’s no benefit to using it more often than that — the larvae or fungal spores it can reach are killed on the first pass or not at all.

What NOT to do

Never apply it at full 3% strength directly to soil or roots. People assume more concentrated means more effective, but undiluted 3% peroxide is harsh enough to damage healthy root tissue along with whatever you’re trying to kill — it doesn’t discriminate between the rot and the roots you’re trying to save.

Don’t use it directly on exposed, cut, or damaged roots. Common mistakes
