
Why Is My Pothos Losing Its Variegation?
A pothos you bought for its marbled white, yellow, or cream patterning can start pushing out leaves that are mostly or entirely green. It’s not disease and it’s not a nutrient problem — it’s the plant reverting to its more efficient, chlorophyll-rich default. Once you know why it happens, it’s usually easy to stop and even reverse on future growth.
Insufficient light (the most common cause)
Variegated patches on a leaf contain little or no chlorophyll, which means those sections can’t photosynthesize. A heavily variegated leaf is effectively doing its job with less usable surface area than an all-green leaf of the same size. In good light that’s a fine trade-off — the plant has energy to spare. In low light, it isn’t. The plant responds by producing new growth with more chlorophyll and less variegation, since a mostly green leaf captures more light and photosynthesizes more efficiently, helping the plant survive in the dimmer spot it’s now in.
This is a gradual shift, not a single-leaf event: each new leaf tends to have a bit less white or yellow than the last, and it usually starts within a few months of a move to a darker location, or in a spot that never had quite enough light to begin with.
Fix: move the plant to brighter, indirect light — a spot with several hours of bright but not direct sun works well. A reverted growing point (genetic instability)
Sometimes the problem isn’t light at all — it’s that the stem’s growing tip has genuinely and permanently lost the ability to produce variegated tissue. Variegation in pothos comes from a genetically unstable sector of cells at the growth point; occasionally that sector reverts to fully green, and every leaf that growing tip produces afterward will be solid green, regardless of how much light you give it. You’ll usually see this as one specific vine on the plant going consistently green while the rest of the plant keeps its normal pattern, which rules out a lighting cause since all the vines share the same environment.
Fix: prune the reverted stem back to just below the last leaf that still shows any variegation, cutting just above a node. Removing the all-green growth stops that section from outcompeting the rest of the plant for energy and redirects growth toward stems that still carry the variegated trait. New growth from below the cut has a good chance of coming back patterned, since you’re cutting back to tissue that hasn’t reverted.
Natural leaf-to-leaf variation
Not every plain or lightly patterned leaf is a problem. Variegation naturally varies from leaf to leaf on a healthy plant — some will be heavily marbled, some almost entirely green, some almost entirely white, and that’s normal variation rather than a sign that something’s wrong. A single less-variegated leaf here and there, with no consistent pattern across the whole plant or a specific vine, usually isn’t worth intervening over.
Putting it together
Look at the pattern across the whole plant before assuming the worst. A gradual, plant-wide fade toward green over several months points to light — move the plant brighter and future growth should improve. A single vine that’s abruptly and consistently green while its neighbors stay patterned points to a reverted growing point — prune it out. And the occasional plain leaf mixed in with mostly patterned ones is just normal variety, not something to fix. Once you’ve matched the cause, keeping the plant in good bright, indirect light going forward is the best way to keep new growth as variegated as possible.
