Leaf Edema on Houseplants (Blistered or Corky Leaf Spots)
Small, watery bumps show up on the undersides of leaves, and within a few days they turn brown, scabby, and slightly raised — like a wart or a spot of cork. It looks like a fungal infection or an insect problem, but there’s no fuzz, no webbing, and nothing crawling on the leaf when you look closely. What causes edema
Edema happens when a plant’s roots take up water faster than its leaves can release it through transpiration. Individual cells inside the leaf swell with excess water pressure, and when a cell takes on more than its wall can hold, it ruptures. The ruptured tissue first looks like a small water-soaked blister, then dies and dries out, turning brown, tan, or rust-colored and developing the rough, corky, slightly raised texture that gives edema away once you know what to look for.

What it looks like
Watery, translucent blisters, usually on leaf undersides. The earliest stage is easy to miss — small raised bumps that look soaked or glassy rather than damaged. They tend to appear on the underside of the leaf first because that’s where cells are most likely to be under pressure from below without the reinforcement the upper leaf surface has.
Brown, tan, or rust-colored corky patches. Within days, the blistered spots die off and dry out, leaving rough, slightly raised scarring with a texture closer to a scab or wart than a typical leaf spot. This corky, bumpy texture — as opposed to a flat, water-soaked lesion — is the most reliable single tell that you’re looking at edema rather than something else.
Spots that don’t spread or change shape over time. Once the affected cells have died and dried out, the damage is done — the corky patches don’t expand, weep, or develop new growth the way an active fungal or bacterial infection would.
No pests, webbing, or honeydew present. Check the leaf closely, including the underside and along the veins, with a hand lens if you have one. If there’s nothing moving and no fine webbing or sticky residue, that rules out the two most common look-alikes below.
Telling it apart from pests or disease
Edema gets misdiagnosed constantly because the raised, discolored spots resemble a few very common problems:

Fungal or bacterial leaf spot typically starts as a flat, water-soaked lesion that spreads, often develops a yellow halo, and can keep growing or merge into larger dead patches over time. Edema lesions stay small, raised, and static once they’ve dried out, and they don’t spread from leaf to leaf the way an active infection does.
How to fix it
Edema doesn’t heal — once a cell has ruptured, that scarring is permanent — but it also isn’t dangerous to the plant beyond the cosmetic damage already done, and it stops progressing as soon as the underlying imbalance is corrected.
- Ease off watering. Let the soil dry out more between waterings than you have been, and avoid watering on cool, overcast, or humid days when the plant’s uptake is likely to outpace what it can transpire.
- Improve air movement and light. A small fan or simply relocating the plant to a spot with better air circulation and brighter (not necessarily direct) light helps leaves transpire faster and keeps water moving through the plant at a more even rate.
- Avoid overly humid, still conditions right after watering. This is one of the few cases where more humidity actively makes things worse rather than better, since it slows transpiration further just when the roots are flush with water.
- Leave the corky spots alone. They won’t spread or worsen, and removing affected leaves isn’t necessary unless the damage is cosmetically significant to you — the plant will simply grow past it with new, unaffected foliage.
How to prevent it going forward
Water on a rhythm that matches the plant’s actual uptake rather than a fixed schedule — check the soil first, and water less when growth has slowed or conditions are cool and humid.
