How to Get Rid of Mold on Houseplant Soil


A fuzzy, cottony patch of white or gray growth spreading across the top of your potting soil looks like something has gone badly wrong, but in almost every case it’s a harmless surface mold rather than a threat to the plant itself. It’s unsightly, it can spread across the surface if left alone, and it’s a useful signal that your watering routine could use adjusting — but it’s rarely the emergency it looks like.

Why mold grows on houseplant soil

The mold you’re seeing is saprophytic — a fungus that feeds on decaying organic matter in the potting mix (bits of bark, peat, coco coir, or old root material) rather than on the living plant. It shows up specifically because three conditions have lined up at once: organic material to feed on, consistent moisture, and still, humid air right at the soil surface.

How this is different from other soil and leaf problems

Fuzzy soil mold gets mixed up with a few other things that look similar but need different fixes:

  • White crust on soil or pots is hard, chalky, and mineral — leftover salts from tap water or fertilizer that get deposited as water evaporates. How to prevent it from coming back
