How to Air Layer a Leggy Houseplant


Air layering is a propagation method that grows roots on a stem while it’s still attached to and fed by the parent plant, rather than cutting first and hoping roots form afterward. That makes it more reliable than a plain cutting for thick or woody-stemmed plants that don’t root easily on their own, and it’s especially useful for rescuing a plant that’s gotten tall and bare at the bottom.

Which plants respond well to air layering

Air layering works best on plants with thick or woody stems — the same plants that tend to struggle to root from a simple stem cutting in water or soil:

  • Fiddle leaf fig
  • Rubber plant
  • Pothos and philodendron, though these also root easily from regular cuttings — air layering is more useful on their thicker, older stem sections
  • Dracaena (including corn plant)
  • Ficus more broadly

Why air layer instead of just taking a cutting

A regular cutting is severed from the parent plant immediately and has to survive on its own stored energy while it tries to grow roots — which is exactly why thick-stemmed, woody plants have a low success rate with plain cuttings. Air layering keeps the stem attached and still receiving water and nutrients from the parent the entire time roots are forming, which means a much higher success rate for plants that would otherwise struggle.

It’s also the best fix for a leggy houseplant that’s grown tall with bare stem at the bottom and leaves only at the top. Rather than starting over from a cutting, air layering lets you root a new, shorter plant partway up the existing stem, keeping the healthy top growth intact and giving you a full, leafy plant again once you separate it.

Step-by-step air layering

  1. Choose a spot on the stem below the leggy growth, where you want the new roots to form — usually a section with mature, decently thick stem.
  2. Make a small wound in the stem. A shallow upward-angled cut about a third of the way through the stem, or a light scrape removing a strip of the outer bark, works well. The wound is what triggers the plant to grow roots at that point, since it interrupts the flow of growth hormones and they accumulate there instead.
  3. Wrap the wound in moist sphagnum moss. Soak the moss, squeeze out the excess water so it’s damp but not dripping, and pack a handful firmly around the wounded section of stem.
  4. Cover the moss with plastic wrap. Wrap it around the moss ball and secure both the top and bottom ends tightly against the stem — twist ties, string, or tape all work — to seal in moisture and keep the moss from drying out.
  5. Wait and check periodically. Roots typically take several weeks to a couple of months to develop, depending on the plant and time of year. Check every week or two; you should be able to see white or tan roots growing through the moss and against the inside of the plastic once they’ve developed.
  6. Cut the stem below the new roots once you can see a healthy network of roots filling the moss. Cut cleanly below the root ball, leaving the moss intact around the new roots.
  7. Pot up the top portion with its new root system in fresh soil, removing the plastic wrap but leaving the moss around the roots to ease the transition. Keep it in bright, indirect light with consistent moisture while it settles in.

The remaining lower portion of the parent plant, now cut back hard, will often push out new side growth from below the cut — so air layering can leave you with both a fresh, full new plant and a fuller, less leggy original.
