How Much Light Do Houseplants Actually Need?


Plant care labels love the phrase “bright indirect light” and rarely explain what it means in a real room. It’s not a vibe — it’s a measurable quantity, and most houseplant problems that get blamed on watering are actually about light. Here’s how to translate the label on the tag into something you can actually check.

Light is measured, not guessed

Light intensity is measured in foot-candles or lux (one foot-candle is about 10 lux). Roughly:

  • Low light: under 100-200 foot-candles (1,000-2,000 lux)
  • Medium light: 200-500 foot-candles (2,000-5,000 lux)
  • Bright indirect light: 500-1,000+ foot-candles (5,000-10,000+ lux), without direct sun hitting the leaves
  • Direct sun: can exceed 10,000 foot-candles (100,000+ lux) at midday

You don’t need a real light meter to get a sense of these numbers. Free phone apps (search “lux meter” or “light meter” on your phone’s app store) use your camera sensor to give a rough reading, and while they’re not lab-accurate, they’re more than good enough to tell a genuinely bright spot from one that only looks bright to your eyes. Human eyes adjust automatically to ambient light, which is exactly why a corner that feels “plenty bright” can measure at a fraction of what a plant tag is asking for.

Window direction sets your ceiling

Which way a window faces determines the maximum light a spot can ever get, no matter how close the plant sits to the glass.

  • South-facing (northern hemisphere): the brightest exposure, with direct sun for much of the day. Great for light-hungry plants, but can scorch delicate leaves right up against the glass.
  • East-facing: gentle direct morning sun, then bright indirect light the rest of the day. One of the easiest, most forgiving exposures for most houseplants.
  • West-facing: bright indirect light most of the day, then strong direct afternoon sun that’s hotter and harsher than an east window’s morning sun.
  • North-facing (northern hemisphere): no direct sun at all, just indirect daylight. This is true low light, and it’s the exposure where low-light-tolerant plants actually earn their keep.

Distance from the window matters more than people expect

Light intensity doesn’t fade gradually as you move away from a window — it drops off sharply. A spot that measures as bright indirect light right next to the glass can fall to medium light just three feet back, and to low light by six or eight feet. A plant sitting across the room from even a south-facing window may effectively be living in low light, regardless of how sunny the room looks to you.

Reading a plant’s label against your real conditions

“Bright indirect light” on a tag means bright light with no direct sun hitting the leaves — think a spot near an east window, or a few feet back from a south or west one, with something like a sheer curtain or a wall between the plant and the sun itself. It does not mean a dim corner just because the room has windows somewhere.

“Medium light” means a spot that’s clearly lit during the day but well back from any window, or close to a north-facing one. “Low light” means a plant can survive there, not thrive — it’s a tolerance, not an ideal.

When you’re comparing a label to your space, measure the actual spot with a light-meter app rather than trusting your eyes, and account for distance from the glass rather than only the compass direction the window faces. A plant tagged for medium light in a spot that measures as low light will survive but grow slowly and never look full; the same plant in genuinely bright indirect light will fill out noticeably faster.

When your space just doesn’t have enough

If you’ve measured a spot and it’s consistently below what a plant needs, you have two honest options: move the plant closer to a brighter window, or add a grow light. Both fix the actual problem. What doesn’t work is leaving a light-hungry plant in a dim spot and trying to compensate with more water or fertilizer — a plant that’s light-starved can’t use either one, and more of both usually just leads to root rot on top of the light problem.
