Distilled vs. Tap Water for Houseplants
Most houseplants don’t care whether the water coming out of your watering can started out distilled or straight from the tap. But a smaller group of sensitive plants genuinely do react to what’s in tap water, and knowing which camp your plants fall into saves you from either wasting money on distilled water you don’t need, or fighting leaf-tip burn you could have avoided.

What distilled water actually is
Distilled water is produced by boiling water into steam and condensing it back into liquid, which leaves behind essentially everything that isn’t water itself — minerals, salts, chlorine, chloramine, and fluoride are all left behind in the process. What comes out the other end is about as pure as water gets.
That purity is the whole appeal for plant care. There’s nothing in distilled water that can build up in the soil over time or cause a chemical reaction in sensitive foliage, because there’s essentially nothing in it at all.
Does removing minerals hurt the plant?
No. This is a common point of confusion — people assume distilled water must be “missing” something plants need. It isn’t. Plants get the minerals and nutrients they actually use for growth from the soil and from fertilizer, not from the water itself. Water’s job is hydration and transport, not nutrition. A plant watered with distilled water and fed on a normal fertilizing schedule gets everything it needs; it’s just not getting extra minerals it didn’t need in the first place.
What’s in tap water, and why it sometimes matters
Tap water usually contains some combination of chlorine or chloramine (added for disinfection), fluoride, and dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium, in amounts that vary a lot depending on where you live. For most houseplants, none of this is a problem — pothos, snake plants, and similar tough plants tolerate tap water without issue for their entire lives.
But a handful of plants are genuinely sensitive to these additives, especially chlorine, chloramine, and fluoride, which can accumulate in the soil and show up as brown, crispy leaf tips over time. Calathea is the classic example — it’s known for developing tip burn from tap water sensitivity more reliably than almost any other common houseplant. Carnivorous plants like the Venus flytrap are sensitive for a related but different reason: they evolved in mineral-poor bog environments, so mineral buildup from tap water can damage their roots even faster than it affects a Calathea’s leaves.
When distilled water makes sense
Reach for distilled water for plants that have shown you they’re sensitive, or that belong to a category known for sensitivity — Calathea and other prayer-plant relatives, carnivorous plants, and any plant where you’re already seeing unexplained tip or margin browning that lines up with your watering. It’s also a reasonable choice if your tap water is heavily chlorinated or particularly hard and you’d rather not deal with troubleshooting later.
When tap water is fine
For the vast majority of common houseplants — pothos, philodendron, snake plant, ZZ plant, most succulents — tap water straight from the faucet is completely fine for the life of the plant. If you want a low-effort middle ground, letting tap water sit out uncovered overnight lets some of the chlorine dissipate, though it won’t remove fluoride or dissolved minerals. Distilled water is a solution for a specific, identifiable problem, not something every plant collection needs by default.

Distilled water strips out minerals and chemical additives entirely, which makes it the safer choice for sensitive plants like Calathea and carnivorous species like Venus flytraps — and plants lose nothing nutritionally by getting it, since they get their minerals from soil and fertilizer anyway. Tap water is convenient and fine for the vast majority of houseplants; it only becomes a real problem for the sensitive minority. Match the water to the plant rather than picking one approach for your entire collection.
