Sphagnum Moss vs. Coco Coir for Aroids
Anyone growing Monstera, Philodendron, or other aroids eventually runs into the choice between sphagnum moss and coco coir, usually while propagating a cutting or mixing up a potting medium. They get lumped together as similar “fibrous, moisture-retentive” materials, but they behave differently enough that picking the wrong one for the job can cost you a cutting or leave a mature plant sitting too wet.

Sphagnum moss
Sphagnum moss holds an unusual combination of properties: it retains a lot of moisture while still keeping enough structure and air pockets that roots growing through it aren’t sitting in dense, airless material the way they would in compacted soil. The downsides are cost and longevity. Good quality sphagnum moss is more expensive than coco coir, and it breaks down over time — it compacts, loses structure, and eventually stops holding moisture and air the way fresh moss does, which means it needs to be refreshed or replaced periodically rather than left in place indefinitely.
Coco coir
Coco coir is made from processed coconut husk fiber, and its main selling points are cost and sustainability — it’s a byproduct of the coconut industry, considerably cheaper than sphagnum moss, and more renewable than peat, which is harvested from slow-forming bogs.
Where it differs from moss is in how it holds water. Coco coir tends to stay wetter for longer once saturated and compacts more over time than sphagnum moss does, which reduces airflow to roots the longer it sits without being refreshed or amended. For rooting cuttings, sphagnum moss is generally the better choice. New roots are especially vulnerable to rot, and the combination of consistent moisture, airflow, and moss’s mild antimicrobial quality gives a cutting the best odds of rooting cleanly before it needs to handle a less forgiving medium.
For potting an already-established, mature plant, coco coir earns its place — but almost always as part of a blended chunky mix rather than alone.
