Coco Coir vs. Peat Moss: Which Base Should Your Potting Mix Use?
Peat moss and coco coir are the two materials most potting mixes are built around — the bulk ingredient that holds moisture and nutrients while everything else (perlite, bark, sand) gets layered in around it. They look similar in a bag and do a similar job, but they come from different places, behave differently once wet, and have very different environmental footprints. What each one is
Peat moss is partially decomposed sphagnum moss, harvested from peat bogs that have been building up organic matter for thousands of years. It’s been the default base for potting mixes for decades because it’s cheap, lightweight, and holds moisture well.
Coco coir is a byproduct of the coconut industry — it’s made from the fibrous material between a coconut’s outer husk and its shell, which used to be discarded as waste and is now washed, processed, and compressed into bricks or loose bags. It’s a newer entrant to the potting mix world, but it’s caught up to peat moss fast, partly on the strength of the environmental argument below.
Water retention and drainage
Both hold a lot of water relative to their weight, which is why either one works as a base. The practical difference shows up in how they behave once they dry out. Peat moss that’s fully dried can become hydrophobic — water beads on the surface and runs off instead of soaking in, so a badly dried-out peat-based mix sometimes needs to be rewetted gradually or even soaked before it absorbs normally again. Coco coir doesn’t have this problem: it rewets easily even after drying out completely, which makes it more forgiving if you let a plant go too long between waterings. Coir also tends to hold a slightly looser, airier structure than peat, which drains a touch faster and resists compacting over time. Peat breaks down and compresses faster, which is part of why an old peat-based mix can end up staying soggy longer than it did when it was fresh — the structure that let excess water pass through has collapsed.
pH and nutrients
Peat moss is naturally acidic, typically in the 3.5–4.5 pH range, which is a genuine advantage for acid-loving plants but works against most common houseplants unless the mix is limed to raise the pH closer to neutral — most bagged peat-based mixes already have lime added for this reason.
Coco coir is close to pH-neutral out of the box, usually in the 5.5–6.5 range, which suits a wider range of houseplants without any adjustment. The catch is that raw coir is naturally high in sodium and potassium, and can bind up calcium and magnesium in a way that makes them less available to roots — a problem known as cation exchange competing with the plant. Quality coir products are “buffered” during processing to neutralize this, but cheap, unbuffered coir can cause subtle nutrient deficiencies over time. Sustainability and environmental considerations
This is where the two materials really part ways. Peat bogs take centuries to form, storing carbon the whole time, and harvesting peat releases that stored carbon while destroying a habitat that won’t regenerate on any timeline that matters to gardening. Peat extraction is a genuine environmental concern, enough that some countries have moved to restrict or phase out horticultural peat harvesting.
Coco coir is a byproduct of an existing food and fiber industry — coconuts are grown for their meat, milk, and husk fiber regardless of whether the leftover pith gets used, so using it as a growing medium repurposes waste rather than extracting something new. It’s the more sustainable choice by a wide margin, which is a big part of why it’s gained ground on peat despite peat having a longer track record in horticulture. The tradeoff is that coir usually travels farther to reach you (most production is in South and Southeast Asia), so it’s not zero-impact — just meaningfully lower-impact than draining a bog.
Which to choose for houseplants
For the average houseplant, coco coir is the better default: it rewets more easily, holds its structure longer, sits closer to a neutral pH, and doesn’t come with peat’s environmental cost. It’s what’s used in the all-purpose recipe in the best soil mix for houseplants, and it’s a straightforward swap into most DIY mixes or bagged products that list peat as the base.
Peat still has a place — it’s cheaper in a lot of markets, more consistent from bag to bag, and its natural acidity is genuinely useful for the smaller group of houseplants that prefer acidic soil, rather than something to fight against. If you already have a peat-based mix that’s working, there’s no urgent need to switch. But if you’re rebuilding a mix from scratch — at a repot or otherwise — coir is the easier material to work with and the one with fewer downsides for most plants in most homes.
