How insecticidal soap works
Insecticidal soap is a contact killer, full stop. It’s formulated from potassium salts of fatty acids that break down the cell membranes of soft-bodied insects on contact — things like aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Once it touches the pest and dries, the pest’s cells rupture and it dies, usually within hours rather than days.
The catch is right there in “on contact.” Insecticidal soap has no residual effect once it dries on the leaf — it doesn’t keep working, and it doesn’t protect against pests that show up afterward.
