Leaf Scorch on Houseplants From Too Much Sun


A leaf that’s suddenly pale, bleached, or blotchy on one side — or has gone crisp and tan in a patch rather than browning evenly at the tip — is usually leaf scorch, the plant equivalent of a sunburn. It’s easy to mistake for a watering problem or a fungal issue, but scorch has a distinctive pattern once you know what to look for, and the fix has nothing to do with your watering routine.

What it actually looks like

Scorch shows up as either bleached, faded, almost washed-out patches, or crispy, dry, tan-to-brown dead tissue, and it’s almost always concentrated on the side of the leaf that faces the light source — not scattered randomly and not confined to the tip or edges. On thinner or more light-sensitive leaves you’ll often see the damage form a rough silhouette of whatever light was hitting it directly, sometimes with a sharp line between healthy green tissue and damaged tissue.

Which plants are most prone to it

Scorch happens most often to plants that evolved for filtered or low light and simply aren’t built to handle direct sun on their leaf tissue — calathea, prayer plants, ferns, pothos, and other understory species are classic candidates. It’s not that these plants can never tolerate brighter light, it’s that their leaves haven’t built up any tolerance and direct sun overwhelms them fast, sometimes within a single afternoon. Why it usually happens right after a move

Scorch rarely shows up on a plant that’s been sitting in the same spot for months — it’s almost always tied to a change. How to acclimate a plant instead of scorching it

The fix isn’t to avoid brighter light altogether — most plants that scorch would actually do fine in more light long-term, they just needed to get there gradually. Increase exposure over a couple of weeks instead of days: a few extra minutes of direct sun at a time, or a spot a little further back from the window at first, moving closer as the leaves adjust. Scorched tissue won’t recover

Once a patch of leaf has scorched, that tissue is dead — it won’t green back up, fade back to normal, or heal over time, no matter what you change afterward. The goal at that point is just to stop further damage: move the plant back or ease off the light source, and let new growth come in adjusted to whatever light level you settle on.
