How to Test and Adjust Soil pH for Houseplants


Soil pH doesn’t get talked about nearly as much as light or watering, but it quietly controls something just as important: whether the nutrients in your soil are actually available to the roots sitting in it. A pot can have plenty of nitrogen, iron, and everything else a plant needs, and the plant can still show deficiency symptoms if the pH is outside the range where those nutrients dissolve into a form roots can absorb. This is called nutrient lockout, and it’s a much more common cause of unexplained yellowing than an actual shortage of fertilizer.

Why pH matters

Nutrients in soil exist in chemical forms that shift with pH. Iron, manganese, and several other micronutrients become progressively less soluble — and therefore less available to roots — as soil gets more alkaline, even when there’s technically enough of them present. Push pH too far in either direction and you get lockout: a well-fed plant behaving like a starved one. Most common houseplants are reasonably tolerant of a range of pH levels, but they do best, and take up nutrients most efficiently, in slightly acidic soil around 6 to 6.5.

How to actually test it

This is the part worth being honest about: the cheap prong-style “soil pH meters” sold for a few dollars at garden centers are notoriously unreliable. Independent testing has repeatedly found that many of them barely correlate with actual soil pH at all — some don’t even contain a real sensor. If you’ve used one and gotten a suspiciously convenient reading of exactly 7.0 regardless of what you tested, that’s a known failure mode of these devices, not a coincidence.

For a result you can actually trust, use one of these instead:

  • A chemical test kit that uses a color-change reagent (the type gardeners have used for decades) — inexpensive and considerably more accurate than a prong meter
  • A lab test — mail a soil sample to a state extension office or private soil lab for the most reliable reading, especially useful if you’re troubleshooting a plant that isn’t responding to anything else you’ve tried

Either option costs a little more time or money than a cheap meter, but it’s the difference between a number you can act on and one that’s essentially random.

Lowering pH for acid-loving plants

Some houseplants and container plants specifically want acidic soil, noticeably more acidic than the 6 to 6.5 range most plants tolerate. Azaleas and camellias are two well-known acid lovers that struggle in neutral or alkaline soil. To lower pH:

  • Elemental sulfur worked into the soil, which soil bacteria slowly convert into sulfuric acid over weeks to months — slow but effective and long-lasting
  • Peat moss mixed into the potting mix, which is naturally acidic and helps maintain a lower pH as part of the growing medium itself
  • An acidifying fertilizer, formulated specifically for acid-loving plants, which nudges pH down gradually with each feeding

Any of these work best as a gradual correction rather than a one-time fix — retest after a few weeks before adjusting further.

Raising pH if needed

Overly acidic soil is less common in houseplant pots than alkalinity, but it happens, particularly with peat-heavy mixes that have been in place a long time. To raise pH, work in garden lime sparingly — a little goes a long way, and overcorrecting into alkaline territory just trades one lockout problem for another. Retest before adding more.

The symptom worth knowing

If a plant is yellowing despite a regular fertilizing schedule, it’s easy to assume it needs more fertilizer or a different formula. Before you do that, it’s worth checking pH first.
