
Perlite vs. Vermiculite: What's the Difference for Houseplants?
Perlite and vermiculite show up in almost every bag of potting mix and every DIY soil recipe, and they’re easy to mix up — both are lightweight, both get added in small amounts, and both come as odd little white or tan specks you’d never guess started as raw rock. But they do close to opposite jobs, and using one where you meant the other can leave a mix draining too fast or staying too wet for the plant it’s meant for.
What perlite is
Perlite is a type of volcanic glass that’s been heated until it pops, the same way a kernel of corn pops into popcorn. The result is a lightweight, porous white pebble that doesn’t hold much water itself. What it’s good at is creating structure — mixed into soil, it wedges tiny air pockets and drainage channels throughout the mix, so excess water has somewhere to go instead of pooling around the roots. What vermiculite is

Both perlite and vermiculite are generally sterile and pH-neutral, so neither one introduces nutrients, pests, or pathogens into a mix on its own — any nutrition in a potting mix comes from the other ingredients. Both are dusty when dry; lightly dampening either one before mixing cuts down on the mess and keeps the fine particles from becoming airborne.
