
How to Use a Light Meter App for Houseplants
“Bright indirect light” means something different in every home, every window, and every season. A light meter app takes that vague phrase and turns it into a number — lux or foot-candles — that you can actually compare against what a plant needs. It’s not a lab instrument, but it’s a huge step up from guessing based on how a spot “looks” bright to your eyes, which adjust to ambient light far more than most people realize.
Why your eyes are bad at judging light
Human vision compensates for light levels automatically, which is exactly why a spot can look “plenty bright” to you while actually sitting well below what a plant needs. A corner three feet back from a window can feel well-lit to a person standing in it, while a light meter reveals it’s barely above low-light territory. What the numbers roughly mean
Light is measured in lux (or foot-candles, roughly lux ÷ 10.76) and most houseplant light categories map to approximate ranges:
- Low light: under 1,000 lux (under ~100 foot-candles) — enough for a snake plant or ZZ plant to survive, not enough for most plants to grow vigorously.
- Medium light: roughly 1,000-5,000 lux — a few feet back from an east or north window, where most common foliage houseplants do fine.
- Bright indirect light: roughly 5,000-20,000 lux — close to an unobstructed window but out of the direct sun beam, the sweet spot for the majority of popular houseplants.
- Direct sun: can spike well above 20,000-50,000+ lux depending on time of day and season — what a south-facing windowsill gets at midday.
These ranges aren’t exact science and different sources round them differently, but they’re consistent enough to be genuinely useful for comparing spots in your own home against each other.
How to take a reliable reading
Open a lux meter app (most phones can run one using the camera or ambient light sensor) and hold the phone at the plant’s canopy height, facing toward the light source the same way the plant’s leaves do — not facing up at the ceiling or down at the pot. Take the reading where the leaves actually sit, not at the windowsill itself, since light drops off fast the farther back into a room you go.
Check at more than one time of day if you can. Light changes substantially between morning and afternoon depending on which way a window faces — see which window direction is best for houseplants for how that plays out — and a single midday reading can make a spot look brighter than it is for most of the day. Checking in different seasons matters too, since a spot that reads as bright indirect light in summer can drop to medium or low light once the sun’s angle shifts in winter.
The accuracy caveat
Phone camera-based light meter apps are not lab-accurate. They’re calibrated for photography, not horticulture, and different phone models and apps can give noticeably different readings for the same spot. Treat the number as a useful estimate, not a precise measurement — the value isn’t in hitting an exact lux figure, it’s in being able to compare one spot in your home against another and against the rough ranges above, instead of relying purely on how “bright” something looks to your eye.
A dedicated light meter (the kind sold for gardening or photography) is more consistent than a phone app if you want a tool you can trust more literally, but for most people the free app is good enough to stop guessing.
Using readings to actually place plants
Once you’ve got readings for a few spots in your home, match them against what a specific plant needs rather than trying to place plants first and hope for the best. A spot that reads medium light is a fine home for a pothos or philodendron but will leave a plant that wants bright indirect light — like most alocasias or calatheas — growing slowly and stretching toward the window over time.
Combine the reading with a moisture meter for a plant that seems off: light and water problems can look similar (slow growth, dropping leaves, pale color), and having an actual number for each factor instead of a guess for both makes it much easier to narrow down what’s actually wrong. If a plant is struggling and the light reading for its spot comes back low or medium when it needs bright indirect, that’s your answer — move it closer to the window or to a brighter room, rather than troubleshooting watering or fertilizer first.
