
Leaf Miners on Houseplants: How to Identify and Stop Them
Leaf miners cause some of the strangest-looking damage of any common plant pest — thin, winding pale trails etched through a leaf, as if someone drew a squiggle inside it with a white pen. Once you’ve seen the pattern once, you’ll never mistake it for anything else.
What leaf miners are
Leaf miners aren’t a single species — the name describes the feeding habit shared by the larvae of certain small flies, moths, and beetles. An adult lays eggs on or inside a leaf, and the larvae that hatch tunnel directly through the leaf’s internal tissue, feeding on the soft layer between the upper and lower surfaces as they go. They live and feed entirely inside the leaf until they’re ready to pupate, at which point they either drop to the soil or emerge to complete their life cycle as adults — who then lay more eggs and start the pattern again.
How to identify them
Winding, squiggly trails are the unmistakable sign. As a larva tunnels through the leaf, it leaves a pale, translucent line behind it that traces its path — narrow at first, sometimes widening into a blotchy pale patch as the larva grows and eats more tissue. Held up to light, an active tunnel often shows the larva itself as a small dark speck at the leading end of the trail.

How to treat an infestation
Remove and destroy affected leaves.
