Broad Mites on Houseplants: The Pest You Can't See


Some pests you can catch red-handed. Broad mites you mostly have to catch by their footprints. They’re small enough, and subtle enough, that most people never actually see one — what they see is a plant’s new growth coming in twisted and wrong, with no obvious cause and nothing crawling on it.

What broad mites are

Broad mites (Polyphagotarsonemus latus) are even smaller than spider mites, which are already hard to see without help. As they feed on a plant’s newest, softest growth, they inject a toxin that distorts the tissue as it develops — and that distortion doesn’t undo itself once the mites are gone. The damage you’re looking at today may already be permanent, which is part of why this pest causes so much confusion.

How to identify them

Twisted, curled, or stunted new growth is the hallmark sign. New leaves may come in narrow, puckered, or brittle, sometimes with a bronzed or thickened look. Flower buds can be deformed or simply fail to open.

No webbing. This is the key difference from spider mites, which leave a fine, dusty webbing once an infestation takes hold. Broad mites leave nothing behind but the damage itself.

No visible mites, even with a hand lens. Spider mites are small but you can usually spot them with a magnifying glass or a sharp phone camera. Broad mites are small enough that this often doesn’t work — you’re diagnosing from the damage pattern, not from seeing the insect.

Broad mites vs. spider mites

It’s worth being explicit about the contrast, since the two get confused constantly:

  • Spider mites: stippled, speckled leaves; fine webbing; mites visible with basic magnification; damage spreads across older leaves as well as new.
  • Broad mites: twisted, distorted, stunted new growth only; no webbing; mites essentially invisible without lab-grade magnification; damage concentrated on the newest, tenderest growth.

Why they’re so often misdiagnosed

Distorted new growth with no visible pest and no webbing looks a lot like other problems — herbicide drift, a nutrient deficiency, or even a viral infection. Plenty of people spend weeks adjusting fertilizer or hunting for a chemical exposure before broad mites even come up as a possibility, simply because there’s nothing to point to. If new growth is coming in twisted and you’ve ruled out an obvious watering or light problem, it’s worth adding broad mites to the list even without direct evidence.

Why they’re hard to treat

Broad mites spread easily between plants that are close together or touching, and they respond inconsistently to the insecticidal soap and neem oil that work reasonably well on other mites and soft-bodied pests. A miticide labeled effective against broad mites specifically — not just a general “mite” product — gives you better odds. Isolate the affected plant immediately, treat according to the product’s schedule, and remove the worst of the distorted growth as you go, since that tissue won’t recover its normal shape even after the mites are dead.

Prevention

Because broad mites are so easy to miss, prevention leans heavily on catching them early rather than spotting the mites themselves.
